The lymphatic system is a defense system for the body. It filters out organisms that cause disease, produces white blood cells, and generates disease-fighting antibodies. It also distributes fluids and nutrients in the body and drains excess fluids and protein. The lymphatic system consists of the lymphoid organs that are spread throughout the body. They consist of bone marrow, thymus, lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, and spleen, as well as the adenoids and tonsils. The lymphatic system and lymphoid organs are involved with growth, development, and deployment of lymphocytes and white blood cells that are key to the immune system. They play the central role in building immune response. Our cells are located in a sea of lymph, which is a clear fluid containing lymphocytes (T-cells and B-cells of the immune system), which circulate through the channels. The lymph nodes filter out the wastes in the lymph, particularly bacteria, preventing it from entering the bloodstream, while at the same time allowing the lymphocytes to pass through. Oxygen and sugar are transported from the blood vessels to nourish the cells via the lymphatic fluid. Wastes from the cells – carbon dioxide, lactic acid and metabolites are carried back to the bloodstream through the lymph fluid. There is no pump like the heart – instead the lymphatic fluid is forced through the system by the action of breathing and muscles, so exercise is crucial to good health. When the lymphatic system is flowing freely everything is fine but when the lymph system becomes blocked or sluggish, an oxygen-starved toxic environment is created which will influence all the cells of the body. A stagnant toxic lymph flow encourages degeneration of both cells and organs and contributes to tumor and cancer formation. Not only are the building, repair and waste disposal systems affected, the body’s defenses against foreign substances are also impaired. In addition to filtering out toxic materials, the lymph nodes also produce substances, which fight off invading viruses and bacteria, and destroy abnormal cells that developed within the body, such as cancer cells. To keep it functioning well, you need to increase its drainage capacity and reduce its intake of toxins.
