The Intestinal system eliminates solid waste products from the body and reabsorbs water. It is composed of the colon (also known as the large intestine) and the rectum. When the colon does not function properly, an accumulation of toxins can build up in the intestines,  which can lead to a variety of concerns including colitis, constipation, hemorrhoids, diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as well as diarrhea and dehydration.

The main function of the colon is the elimination of waste and the reabsorption of water.  The colon extracts water and sends it back into the bloodstream. Sometimes food and waste matter pass through the colon more quickly than normal due to emotional stress, the use of prescription drugs or the presence of excessive bacteria which results in diarrhea and can cause severe dehydration of body cells. Constipation can also be caused by stress, poor dietary habits, including a lack of fiber and a sedentary lifestyle. If the body does not get adequate water, the colon will absorb more water from food and waste.

Good colon health is therefore important and requires adequate dietary fiber, which provides the colon with bulk necessary to facilitate the process of peristalsis as well as absorbing toxins in the intestinal tract.  In addition it is also important to get sufficient water to maintain the healthy mucous lining of the intestines and also helps keep stools soft and pliable.  Regular exercise stimulates the action of the colon as well as aiding the lymphatics in removing toxins. A very important component of colon health is the balance of intestinal bacteria or "flora" since more than 400 types of bacteria reside in your gastrointestinal tract. The two main types of friendly bacteria are Lactobacillus acidophilus ("acidophilus") and "bifidus", which is a strains of bifido-bacteria. These bacteria assist in the breakdown of food and assist in the production of B-vitamins.  Antibiotics, alcohol, caffeine, high-meat, high-fat diets, high-sugar or low-fiber diets  and stress can destroy the “flora”. Low levels of stomach acid also promote the growth of harmful bacteria.
