The Glandular (Endocrine) system is made up of a group of glands that produce hormones (the body's messengers). Hormones are chemicals that control body functions, such as metabolism, growth, and sexual development. The glands, which include the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, thymus gland, pineal body, pancreas, ovaries, and testes, release hormones directly into the bloodstream, which are transported to organs and tissues. The ovaries are the female sex organs that produce estrogen and progesterone. The male hormone testosterone is produced in the testes.

The Glandular and Nervous systems work together to maintain balance and interaction between cells. These systems regulate voluntary and involuntary actions within the body such as growth, metabolism, menstruation digestion, elimination and sleep. While the Glandular system communicates using hormones, the Nervous system uses electrical impulses and chemicals called neurotransmitters.

The Nervous and Glandular systems are linked by the hypothalamus (part of the brain stem), which is the control center for the body's physical and emotional responses. The hypothalamus appears to control hunger, thirst, pain, pleasure, water balance, temperature, blood pressure, sexual desire and other emotions. When the body senses stress it redistributes energy that can elevate blood pressure, increase blood sugar, accelerate heart rate and constrict blood vessels.

The pancreas has two main functions- to manufacture various enzymes for digestion, and to release hormones to help control the body's use of carbohydrates. It releases insulin to help each cell absorb glucose to burn as energy and the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. The digestive tract also contains hormones; Gastrin is secreted into the stomach, which triggers secretion of gastric juices and enzymes in the pancreas. Stomach acidity release Secretin, in the small intestines, which in turn causes the pancreas to secrete its enzymes and stops the secretion of acid. Proper nutrition is crucial, as most glands require increased amounts of certain minerals to function as enzymes.  For example, the pancreas needs chromium, the prostate requires zinc, and the thyroid requires iodine.

Glandular system health concerns include hormone imbalances, weak adrenal glands, thyroid imbalance, diabetes, hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
