The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach is to treat the whole body, balancing the inner energy and the outer energy (the Yin and Yang).

In traditional Chinese medicine, they evaluate individuals in a type category or constitution.  For example, wood, fire, metal, earth, water, heat and energy.  It is also important to determine whether a constitution is stressed or weakened.

Illness is categorized as either Yang, which is hot, in excess and near the surface; or Yin, which is cold, deficient and deep.  

Earth is linked to the stomach and spleen.  Metal is linked to lungs and large intestines.  Water is linked to kidney/bladder.  Wood is linked to the liver and gallbladder.  Fire is linked to heart and small intestines.

You should choose a Chinese herbal remedy according to your constitution, rather than a given symptom or disease.
